Community Color is a collection of directories and services for towns in the mountain west. The collection of sites is independently owned, but is dedicated to promoting local, independent web development. At this point, the primary focus of Community Color is to provide human edited open directories for targetted towns. These directories invite people in or near the targetted towns to add their links. Web surfers can leave comments and ratings. Listing is free. I do include a small number of clearly marked advertisers in the listings. In most cases the advertisers are simply web sites that offer affiliate programs. The first wave of the internet was all about companies and people breaking out of their local community and accessing the world at large. The Internet gave people the ability to create and join communities that shared interests regardless of where they happened to be born. It also gave people the ability to shop at stores from around the world. Yet people are still a product of their place, and care a great deal about their immediate local community. The goal of LinksAlive.com is to prepare for the second wave of internet development that will help people learn more about their their local environs. To do this, I've started by building small open directories for several towns in the Mountain west. A native of Denver, living in Salt Lake, I decided to leverage the code and design the program so that I could promote multiple communities at the same time. I've designed the program as a hierarchical tree. Links Alive is the root directory of the tree. The towns in the directory are branches. I invite people who live in the communities covered by Community Color to add their sites. To pay for the site, I run affiliate programs from several stores. If you are shopping online, I invite you to Link Tracks Mall which lists thousands of online stores. This online mall pays for the free local sites. |
