Starbucks is the world's largest coffee shop. Wikipedia [drawn 3/23/10] claims the company operates over 16,000 stores in 49 countries. The store mix includes stand alone Starbuck coffee houses and smaller franchises in select retailers such as Barnes and Noble.

Starbucks was founded in 1971 by an English teacher, a history teacher and a writer. The original company concentrated on selling roasted beans. Entrepreneur Howard Schultz joined Starbucks in 1982. In 1985, Howard Schultz established a chain of coffee stores named Il Giornale. In 1987, he purchased Starbucks, rebranded Il Giornale and expanded on the coffee house concept.
