General Nutrition Centers
General Nutrition Centers was founded in 1935 by David Shakarian. Mr. Sarkarian's first store was called Lackzoom. He sold honey, grains and exotic products like yogurt (new to the American market at the time).
At the time, the idea of a health food store was dismissed as a fad. GNC proved the nay-sayers wrong and has become one of the most successful franchise businesses in history. The GNC web site reports that (as of 2006) there are 4800 GNC stores in the United States and a number of franchises abroad.
GNC has played a vital role in educating Americans on nutritional and supplemental matters.
